Episode 5.6 "316"

I have to say this was my least favorite episode of the season so far. I mean, it was still good, but overall the characters were developing in unflattering ways and the tone was a little too bleak or something. But, there's a lot of interesting new stuff to talk about, so here goes:

THE LAMP POST : The new Dharma station is named The Lamppost, which is a direct nod to C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series. In Narnia, the lamp post was seen in the middle of the woods by the kids as they first entered Narnia through the magic wardrobe. The Lamp Post is an appropriate name, since this room helps you find the island. And it sounds better than a station called “The Wardrobe”.

THE ISLAND WAS ALWAYS MOVING. Huh? Ms. Hawking tells everyone that the island is always moving, and that’s why they were never rescued. I had to watch it again to see if she meant moving in time, or just around the globe. But she meant around the globe. The Dharma folks were just using the pendulum to figure out what time the island would show up at what location. So who built the pendulum? My guess is Daniel, because Ms. Hawking sounded a touch proud of the “brilliant man” who built it. The island moving around led me to the worst possible Lost theory of all time, however: Is the island actually the enchanted moving village from the musical Brigadoon? I hope not.

THERE ARE POCKETS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WHAT ALL OVER THE WHO NOW?
So, Ms. Hawking said there were pockets of energy all over the world that were connected, and the island was just one of them (as was the church in which they met, or at least the ground on which the church was built). Obviously the island is a really important energy pocket, but does the fact that there are other pockets mean that there are possibly new weird places like the island available for future spin-off series? Maybe they can do it like the MTV’s roving Real World series and have spin-off shows like LOST: SPOOKY NY LOFT or LOST: CREEPY SCOTTISH GLEN. That last one actually sounds pretty good.


THE REALLY BORING BINDER – Ms. Hawking gives Jack a binder of all the flights flying around the world. Is this binder how the Dharma Initiative tracks planes in order to somehow send their “supply drops”? The supply drops have always bugged me. Why wouldn’t whoever’s sending them know that the Dharma folks are all dead? Who knows. I’m going to get an answer on those supply drops one day or I will initiate the first ever lawsuit of a viewer vs. a TV show.

DESMOND’S OUT: And, he asks some good questions. Why would Jack trust Ben or Ms. Hawking? If they’re so eager for him to get back, why wouldn’t he use that leverage to get some freaking answers? And also, why doesn’t Ms. Eloise Hawking want to hear more about her son? She looked pretty uninterested in the topic when Desmond brought it up. Maybe it’s because she found out Daniel once named his lab rat after her. Cue swelling trumpet music, cut to black and…. LOST.


JOHN THE PROXY: So the return flight is flight 316, and it has a dead John on it. Obviously that’s a reference to John 3:16 from the Bible, a verse that says God loved us so much that he took it upon himself to wear your dad’s old shoes in order to help you re-crash yourself onto a crazy magical island. Or something like that. Obviously they’re trying to paint Locke as a Jesus figure, sacrificing himself to save the rest of them. Which is interesting. On a side note, the bit with the shoes kind of bugged me. Why wouldn’t Jack just give Locke the watch that his dad gave him back in this mobisode? I thought that was possibly the point of that storyline. Weird. Maybe he pawned the watch at some point (along with his razors) to purchase gallons and gallons of alcohol and illegal meds.

LOCKE’S NOTE: I also thought this was really annoying on Jack’s part. If you know your friends are on the island and need your help, why wouldn’t you want to read what Locke had to say? What if it were specific instructions? “Dear Jack, when you get to the island, look out for the time skipping thing, and don’t go down in any wells because you might jump back in time to before the well was built and… “ etc. Seemed dumb to me. Turns out, Jack was afraid that Locke might blame him. Which also kind of turned out to be true. “I wish you’d believed me.”, Locke wrote. Guilt trip from beyond the grave. Nice, Locke, nice. Your noble last words are basically, “I told you so.”


BEN’S SERMON: “Who is Ms. Hawking?” Jack asks, sitting in the church with Ben. It’s bold new move for a character on the show to ask a fairly straightforward question about what’s happening. So Ben punishes him for his directness by delivering a sermon on the apostle Thomas. It’s a slightly creepy sermon, using an odd pronunciation of the possessive form of Jesus, but Jack seems to like it. Then, to destroy any credibility he might have as Jack’s new pastor, Ben immediately goes off to try and kill Penny.


BEN VS. PENNY So, obviously Ben was heading out to kill Widmore’s daughter. But we have no idea what happened. He called Jack from a boatyard, so either he killed both Desmond and Penny, or tried to kill Penny and got thrashed by Desmond. I’m hoping for “thrashed by Desmond”, although Ben killing Penny would certainly bring Desmond back to the island for revenge. But I think that the writers have spent too much time building up the love story between Penny and Desmond to kill off Penny now.

So, eventually the episode gets to everyone converging on flight 316. Let’s look at the members of this return flight and some theories on their motivations:

SUN: Sun‘s been getting less and less likable this season and now she doesn’t even give a second thought to leaving her daughter behind? She’s apparently totally fine with allowing her daughter to be raised by a known mobster. I definitely think there’s something to the theory that offspring Aaron and Ji Yeon will meet up later in life and go to the island to find their parents.

KATE: Kate somehow got worse this episode, too. Showing up at Jack’s house and walking straight to the bed? Classy. Telling Jack never to ask about his nephew again? Super classy. She was also super rude about the morning coffee for some reason. So what did Kate do with Aaron? Maybe she saw another vision of Claire, and then took Aaron to Claire’s mom and told her the truth. Maybe Claire tells her something happened to Sawyer to motivate her. OR, maybe Aaron got weird special powers like bird-killing Walt had that freaked her out. Or, maybe she just left him at the mall by accident because she sucks so much. Who knows, hopefully we’ll find out soon.

BEN: Why is he allowed to go back to the island? Was he just lying when he told Locke that turning the wheel meant you could never go back?


SAYID: Why is he in handcuffs and on his way to Guam? Did he kill someone there during his days as Ben’s hitman? What is he looking at in that picture above? Interesting that he had another US Marshall type with him, like Kate did on flight 815.

HURLEY: I loved the bit about Hurley buying up all the available tickets on the flight. But how did he get there? Maybe we’ll learn that Charlie appeared in a vision and told him to come back, and also asked him to bring him a new guitar, hence the guitar case.

FRANK: I’m glad that Frank Lapidus is back. That was probably my favorite part of the episode. Hopefully he won’t suffer the same fate as the flight 815 pilot. By which I mean getting killed off in his first few seconds on Lost and then having to resign himself to becoming a character on Heroes instead.


THE RANDOM DUDE: Oh yeah, there was also a new character sitting next to Hurley on the flight. The way he talked to Jack at the ticket counter definitely insinuated there was more to come from him.

SEAT BELT SIDE NOTE: If you’re on a flight that you pretty much KNOW is going to crash because you have insider time travel information – then FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT THE WHOLE FLIGHT. Kate, Hurley…I’m talking to you. Don’t be stupid.

THE OTHER PASSENGERS: Jack asks what’s going to happen to the rest of the passengers, and Ben responds curtly “Who cares?” I think the point of this (besides being funny) is that the writers are making sure we know there are other people on board who could possibly show up on the island later.

WIDMORE THEORY: Ok, so let's say Desmond goes back to Penny after leaving the church. When he gets back to the docks, Widmore and his henchmen are there, trying to get Penny away from Desmond. Desmond confronts Widmore and somehow spills the news that the Losties are headed back to the island. Suddenly, Ben shows up to kill Penny and there’s a big showdown between Widmore’s thugs and Ben. During the skirmish Penny and Desmond escape in the boat. Maybe there's an awesome boat chase scene, I don't know. Later, Widmore tracks down the flight that Jack’s on and sends some of his own people along for the ride. These henchmen end up on the island and become a new threat to the Losties living there. And maybe it was Widmore’s people in the Outrigger Canoe a couple of episodes ago shooting at Sawyer’s group. THE END.

DID THE PLANE EVEN CRASH? I don’t know, but there was a flash of light, which means the Losties traveled through time. Hence Jin showing up at the end in the 70s Dharma van wearing a Dharma jumpsuit.


JIN IN A BUS: So why was Jin working for Dharma? Did Locke fix the wheel last episode, causing time to stop jumping and stranding Jin, Sawyer, Daniel, Miles and Juliet in the 70s or 80s? Is that when Daniel will go to the site of the wheel, like in the season opener? Did they all start working for Dharma as a ruse for some reason?

PREVIEW FOR NEXT EPISODE/SPOILERS: So we see right off the bat in the 10 second preview that Locke is back and wearing a hood. We see him talking to Sayid’s police officer lady on the island. Then we see him lying in the road about to get hit by a car. In that shot, he’s wearing the clothes he was wearing when he turned the wheel, so I think he’s unfortunate enough to have the island spit him out in the middle of a busy road somewhere. Maybe when you spin the wheel the island drops you off in one of the other magnetic spots around the globe that Ms. Hawking was talking about? If that’s true, then there’s one in Tunisia for sure, where Ben and the Polar bear landed. Next in the preview we get a glimpse of Locke about to hang himself, and, sure enough, it looks like Ben is there encouraging him. So, yet again, Ben was lying when he told Jack he didn’t know that Locke committed suicide. You can’t trust anything Ben says. I bet he really doesn’t even know how to read.

The next episode is entitled “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham”.

Episode 5.5 "This Place is Death"

This was maybe my favorite episode of the season so far, just because it was kinda creepy. Here's random thoughts:

BONJOUR AND ADIEU, FRENCH SCIENCE CREW: Well, Rousseau's science expedition didn't last long. I was kind of hoping we'd get to see more of their story. I feel like if the producers hadn't made an agreement to end the show in two seasons that we would have had several episodes of Danielle's saga. Or at least more than a fourth of an episode. With everything happening this quickly it kind feels like the writers are going down the checklist, wrapping up lose ends. Or split ends, as the case may be. HAIR JOKE! But I kid Danielle. Anyway, even if the show is now somehow moving a little faster than I'd like, at least we're getting answers and not "Hey let's play ping pong or golf this episode. Oh, we already did that? Hey, a Foosball table washed up."

So, here's what we learned about Rousseau's misadventures: The Monster attacked and took Montand down what is officially known in geekdom as a "Cerberus Vent", or Smoke Monster Hole In A Temple for the rest of the world. (The blast door map in the hatch called the monster "Cerberus" and labeled several places "CVs" which the producers later revealed stood for Cerberus Vent. Read up on the monster here.) Then the rest of the crew went in the hole (except Danielle, thanks to Jin). Flash to a what can't be more than 2 months later (because Rousseau is still pregnant) and we see that Danielle has killed all of her crew except Robert. Robert tells Danielle that the monster is actually a security system, so now we know why Danielle said that back in Season 1. Then she has to shoot possessed Robert, but apparently keeps the nice music box he gave her.


WERE THE CREW POSSESSED? I don't think they were smoke monster apparitions because you could shoot and kill them. Maybe breaching the temple infected them somehow, and made them want to kill anyone not infected. Weird. I hope we get more explanation on that temple and the cause of the "sickness".

FOR THOSE OF YOU WONDERING HOW JIN SURVIVED THE BOAT CRASH: He gave a very succinct answer — "Water." Um, ok. The writers then clarified through Daniel that he was blown away from the boat deck by the blast. Whatever, I'm glad he's back.


CHARLOTTE'S PAST: So, via some wacky time travel of the brain variety we learn that Charlotte was definitely raised on the island. Is it confusing that they're traveling through time while Charlotte's mind is traveling through time on it's own? Yes. She mentions that her mom raised her, and that her dad died on the island, so I'm thinking my earlier theory that her dad was Horace Goodspeed is right on the money. Especially when she mentioned Geronimo Jackson, a band that fans are pretty sure Horace was in, based on pics from the album cover. The album was first seen in the hatch. She then dies right after delivering the shocker that Daniel will one day see her as a child and tell her to never come back to the island.


THE WELL, THE TEMPLE: We're getting to see a lot of crazy old buildings with hieroglyphics lately. I have no idea what it means, but I think it obviously points to an ancient civilization that has lived on the island for some time. Richard's people perhaps. For the record, I don't think this temple is the same one that Richard and the Others were hiding at during the end of last season, but just because it doesn't look big enough. Maybe it keeps going or something.


CHRISTIAN SHEPHARD, AGAIN: Ok, so the monster either likes to appear as Christian Shephard or Christian's ghost is somehow alive and linked to Jacob or my brain just exploded. Either way, a shocking twist for me even though I saw the actors name listed on the credits. Notice he has a lantern and not a flashlight, which you will remember Jacob HATES with a passion. I'm guessing he's an apparition and not there physically since he couldn't or wouldn't help Locke up. Christian/The Island/Jacob's spokesperson tells Locke basically that Ben tricked him yet again. Locke told Ben that he was instructed to move the island, and Ben told Locke that the island meant Ben had to do it. Never trust Ben. It's also very possible Ben was lying about not being able to come back to the island after turning the wheel. Christian also tells Locke that dying is part of his "Sacrifice". I think this is a subtle answer to Locke's question from Season 1. Locke had a dream that the island demanded a sacrifice, and then when Locke acted on the dream, Boone died. So he thought Boone was the sacrifice. But, I think this statement from Christian means that Boone just died, but LOCKE was actually meant to be the sacrifice all along. Kinda cool.


THE FROZEN DONKEY WHEEL, AGAIN: So Locke turns the wheel that Ben turned, and it's obviously jumping in place a bit. Will this fix the time jumps? I hope not because I want to see more of the island's past. Also, we know Daniel keeps moving in time a bit, or at least goes back to see Charlotte and that Marvin Candle guy, so I can only assume the Losties keep time jumping for a bit.

MEANWHILE, OFF-ISLAND: Kate and Sayid bow out of going back. Sun listens to Ben, who tricks her into going back even though I think he knows that Locke promised not to bring her back. Then Desmond shows up at Ms. Hawking's LA church and even Ben looks confused. So we know that Ms. Hawking is for sure Daniel's mom, and most likely Ellie from The Others because her first name is Elouise. Ben slamming the brakes on the van and telling Sun and Jack that he's been protecting them was... suspicious. Can that be true? And obviously he's not protecting them for any other reason than helping himself.

Ok, here's some random theories:


THE RUNWAY: Heard this theory on The Jay and Jack Lost Podcast. Way back in Season 3, the Others were making Kate and Sawyer help them build a "runway." Later, Sawyer asked Juliet why they were building it and she jokingly said "for the aliens", and then admitted that she didn't know. Obviously Jacob told them to do it. Is the runway where the Oceanic Six will land on their return to the island? And did Jacob know that long ago?

GARDEN OF EDEN: So for a while I've wondered if the island is actually the Garden of Eden, not meant to be discovered by man. After Adam and Eve were kicked out for eating from the tree of knowledge, God placed a cherubim with a flaming sword to prevent them from reentering. Is the island the forbidden garden, and the Monster is the cherubim protecting it from the sinful humans who are entering it without permission? Is that why some people are on Jacob's list and some aren't? That they're "good" and "bad" people? And is that why Locke sees the monster as a beautiful light and Eko saw it as terrifying? If so, there's definitely some questionable theology in place (since the Bible teaches that no one is "Good" except God) but it is an interesting idea. Richard could be some kind of archangel, like Michael. Jacob could maybe be the actual Jacob from the bible, but that's even more confusing. Biblical stuff keeps coming up, so I do think this theory is a possibility.


RANDOM FACTS ABOUT JACOB: The name Jacob means "Usurper", someone who takes a position that belongs to someone else. (Like Ben does to Locke.) In the Old Testament, Jacob had a son named Benjamin, and Aaron was his great-great grandson(!) On a side note, some folks think this is the guy who played Jacob, in that brief glimpse of him sitting in the chair in the cabin. But, when asked if Jacob had been cast yet, one of the producers acknowledged that there was indeed someone sitting in the chair, but that the role had not yet been cast. Mysterious. Read up on what little we know on Lost's Jacob here.

NEXT WEEK'S PREVIEW: The next episode is entitled "316". Interesting, see my last post on The Little Prince and Anjira Airlines for a 316 reference. In the clips we see folks getting ready to go back to the island, including Hurley, and we see what appears to be Jack in a suit diving off a waterfall. Naturally. We also see that Kate's back already and smooching Jack to boot. For the record, Kate and Sawyer make a better couple. Jack should stick with the reliable, pouting Juliet.

Episode 5.4 "The Little Prince"

Well, that was a good episode. Let's pick it apart like crazy people. I'm going to try a new format, where we see what questions were answered, and what new questions came up. Then we'll take a peek at what's up next on Lost.

But first let me say: Montand! Montand! We have Montand! He's the one on the left in the picture above, and he currently has two arms. But not for long.

NEW ANSWERS:

KATE'S IDEA: Well, first off we learn it was Kate's idea to say that Aaron was hers. Not much of a revelation, but there it is. I have to say it's a surprise to me how much of the story about Oceanic 6's lie being formed we're getting to see in Season 5. I'm not sure it's necessary, but I guess it doesn't hurt.


SUN IS WORKING WITH WIDMORE: The show never came out and said this, but it looks like its the only possible answer. Widmore has given Sun info on where Ben is, and even provided a gun to shoot him with. And some chocolates. Also, photos of Jack and Ben in front of Locke's funeral home. This is weird to me, because if they can sneak up on Ben and take those pictures, then they could surely send a sniper to finish him off. So why does Widmore need Sun's help?


IT WAS BEN'S LAWYER: I think we all saw that one coming. I have to say the Claire's mom misdirect had me going a bit at first, but apparently Claire's mom had no idea what Jack was talking about. I wonder how Jack backed himself out of that one? Oh, you don't know about your secret Grandson? Gotta go, left the iron on.


HURLEY'S GETTING OUT OF JAIL FREE: Ben's lawyer must be pretty good if he can get the charges dropped on Hurley that quickly. Especially since Hurley fled from a mental institution (where Sayid left a dead body) and then was seen holding a gun at the scene of the next two deaths. I thought we were going to see a Lost jailbreak episode, so that was kind of a let down. Seriously, that was some seriously quick and slightly improbable law work. But Ben's dry delivery of the line "He's my lawyer" was classic.


JIN'S ALIVE! We never saw his body, so I guess we all figured this was the case, but it was still a surprise that Rousseau and her crew found him.

ROUSSEAU AND HER CREW! And, as I mentioned before, she's got Montand with her. And also Robert, her boyfriend (He's the one that gave her the music box Sayid saw of hers back in Season One). So based on what we know of Rousseau's story, we can expect that the rest of the crew will contract a "sickness", and for some reason that makes her have to kill them all, including Robert. Doesn't seem like that could be the same as the nosebleeds to me, since you don't usually shoot someone when their nose bleeds. But who knows. We also know the crew's going to go into the "Dark Territory" at some point so Montand can lose his arm. Read up on Rousseau's confusing past here. For the record, Rousseau landed on the island in 1988, so that's what year it is for the Losties on the island at the end of the episode.

THE NOSEBLEEDS: Well, now we know that the more time you've spent on the island, the sooner you get the nosebleeds. Miles getting a nosebleed right after Charlotte almost confirms that he is the son of DHARMA's Marvin Candle.

NEW QUESTIONS:


WHO'S TRYING TO CAPTURE SAYID? Obviously they weren't trying to kill him, as they kept using tranquilizers. Was it Ben, again, trying to move things along? Doesn't look like it but maybe he knew Sayid wouldn't help him otherwise. That could somehow possibly explain why it was so easy for "Charges to be dropped" for Hurley if all the dudes they killed were working for Ben anyway. Can murder charges really be "dropped"? Sorry, still hung up on that point. But either way I think it's more likely that these dart guys are working for Widmore.

WHY DID THE KILLER HAVE KATE'S ADDRESS? I'm guessing because he was supposed to capture her next. Or, if it was Ben that hired them, then it was just to get Jack to call Kate. Which is pretty sneaky.

CAN THE LOSTIES TALK TO THEIR PAST SELVES? We still don't know. Mostly because Sawyer didn't try.


AJIRIA AIRLINES? OUTRIGGER CANOES? HUH? So, after one flash the Losties make it to the beach and the Zodiac raft is gone, and the camp is trashed. This means they're most likely in the future, sometime after 2005, because before they started jumping around in time the camp was still in order and well stocked. It's great to know we can now jump FORWARD in island time. Anyway, they find two outrigger canoes and one has a bottle of Ajiria Airlines water in it. I was surprised to learn that Ajiria Airlines has its own pretend site here. Interesting facts about the Ajiria Airlines site: If you watch the video on the site, there's one frame of an image hidden in there featuring a chauffeur at an airport holding a sign that reads "John 316" except that the word "John" is written in Devanagari. That is certainly mysterious. John 3:16 is one of the most famous verses of the Bible: For God so Loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Also Ajiria is Hindi for "island". There's actually a TON more weird things about this site, including Origami with hidden messages and some possible hidden pics of future cast members. If you don't have time to play around on the site and uncover it's secrets (some of which are apparently next to impossible to find) you can do what I did and read about the site here: So, what does this all mean? I have no idea. Who was shooting at the Losties? Here's a pic of the 'other Others' or whoever it was (click to embiggen):


Since they were too far away to see, some folks are guessing it's someone we know, like The Oceanic Six come back to the island to rescue Sawyer and the others. But if that's the case why would they be shooting at them? Mysterious. I will say that if you click on the above pic the one guy on the right looks a little like Sawyer from a distance. But if that's the case I'm even more confused.

WHY WAS THIS EPISODE CALLED 'THE LITTLE PRINCE'? The Little Prince is a great book by a french guy with a long name. It involves a young prince who lives alone on a tiny asteroid. The asteroid is named Besixdouze. Besixdouze is also the name of Rousseau's crew's ship, according to the equipment washed up on shore that Locke found. I have no idea what this means, but it's interesting.

FRENCH TRANSLATION, PLEASE: I was curious what the heck Rousseau's crew was saying in French when they discovered Jin. Here's a complete translation.


BEN'S VAN: The van that Ben and Sayid drive to go meet up with Ben's lawyer says "Canton Rainier" on the side of it. That's apparently an anagram for "Reincarnation". Huh? At this point I feel like the writers are just messing with us.

WAIT, ROUSSEAU MET JIN? Wouldn't she have then recognized him later in life? I'm guessing no, based on the rule established with Desmond and Daniel two episodes ago. Apparently, you don't get a new memory UNTIL the moment the time disruption happens. Which makes no sense at all, but almost. It's enough to make your nose bleed.

NEXT ON LOST:

MILD SPOILERS BASED ON TITLE AND 10 SECOND PROMO FROM LAST WEEK: So the next episode is entitled: "This Place is Death" which is a quote from Rousseau herself when she led the Losties into the Dark Territory back at then end of Season One. I'm excited about it because I've always wondered about the Dark Territory and its history ever since they first came up in the Season One finale. I predict we'll see the smoke monster and get a glimpse of the "sickness" that Rousseau's team contracts. Also in the promo, we learned that Sun is going to pull the gun on Ben, and Ben is going to say "Jin is still alive. I can prove it." Will we see more of Desmond and Ms. Hawking?

Widmore & "The Incident"

Ok, new theory of mine, one that I think makes sense and explains a lot:

Young Widmore gets into an argument with the Others and joins Dharma. Widmore agrees with Dharma's take on the island: He wants to harness its power and mine it for its scientific treasures. The Others are more interested in respecting and protecting the island. So Widmore betrays them and joins Dharma.

In Dharma, he learns about the time travel potential of the island and the frozen wheel that lies under the Orchid. Greedy for power, and against Dharma's wishes he goes to the wheel and turns it, causing "The Incident". Like Ben, he disappears and is banished from the island, never allowed to return. (That would explain why he sends the freighter people to the island, but doesn't go himself. He still wants to mine the treasures of the island, but can't go back in person).

After he turns the wheel, the flashes start up and the Dharma folks start skipping in time. To stop this from happening, they build the original Hatch, which regulates the time flashes by releasing them in small bursts every 108 minutes. When Desmond turns the key and the Hatch implodes, he recieves the brunt of the blast and starts seeing flashes of the future before his eyes.

The reason that Desmond was "saving the world" by pushing the button is that if you don't get the time flashes in check, they will cause some kind of time dissonant reverberating effect that will slowly destroy time and the world as we know it. That is why it is so imperative that it be stopped, and possibly why Ms. Hawking says they have to do it in the next 70 hours.

Episode 5.3 "Jughead"

Random thoughts on last night's great episode:

TRIP WIRES/THE WAR: So apparently U.S. soldiers are fighting the others. Who sent the U.S. soldiers? How did they find the island? For the record, I think the others are wearing fake military outfits with false names on them to trick the U.S. soldiers, just like they wore homeless person outfits to trick our Losties during season one and two.


ELLIE: We also meet a new Other, Ellie. She says to Daniel "I can't believe you came back" but I don't think she knew him. I think at this point she's thinking Daniel and his friends are U.S. soldiers. And she and her crew had just killed some other U.S. soldiers as Miles' supernatural powers told us, so that's probably why she couldn't believe more of them came back.

OTHERS SPEAK LATIN: According to the Internort, a form of Latin known as "vulgar Latin". If I were traveling with Juliet, I would ask her to please sit down and tell me EVERYTHING SHE KNOWS about the others. But this is LOST, so they'd never do that. Will we learn that they speak Latin because they've been around so long?


LOCKE CAN'T PULL A TRIGGER: But he can sure as heck throw a knife in someone's back without a second thought. So, he doesn't kill future Widmore, because he's "one of his people." When he learned that the Other he saved was also the one who came back to the island with a freighter armed to the teeth to kill everyone, I wonder if Locke regretted it. AND, if he had shot him, would they have disappeared? Because if Widmore hadn't sent the freighter then they all would have had to move the island and start skipping in time.


WIDMORE: Really cool that we get to see Widmore as a young necker-snapper. I'm guessing that he gets banned from the island at some point, probably by Ben. And he knows the island is powerful and wants to take it over. I think the reason he supports Daniel Faraday's studies and experiments in the future is because he remembers him from the atomic bomb stuff, and obviously Ellie could have told Widmore that Daniel claimed to be from the future. So, my thought is that Widmore starts sponsoring Daniel's research when Daniel is young because he knows that one day he is destined to find the island. Also, Widmore and Ellie snapped at each other, which made me think maybe they had a relationship together. Could blond Ellie be blond Penny's mom?

CHARLOTTE'S NOSE BLEEDS: Who were Charlotte's parents? We know she was probably raised or born on the island, and we know she recognized the Dharma logo she found in the desert on the polar bear, so I think her parents were Dharma. And my best guess would be Horace and Oliva Goodspeed. Horace is the one in the dream that Locke saw building Jacob's cabin. And he claimed to be building the cabin for his wife to get away from Dharma. Perhaps because she was pregnant? Horace was killed in the purge, and was interestingly also the body that Ben stopped next to in order to close his eyes, paying him respect. Lost producers have said that Horace and Olivia will play a important role in the future of Lost. Read up on them here. DANIEL'S MOM: Is in LA, so obviously it's the chalkboard mathematics lady, Mrs. Hawking. But that means Daniel's mom is an other? My friend Zach thinks that Daniel is Widmore and Hawking's son, and that's why Widmore supports him and why he seemed hesitant to give Desmond her info. Interesting theory, but I think he's hesitant because she's a lead Other.


WIDMORE'S PAINTING: Also weird was that in this episode future old Widmore had a painting on his office wall that said "Namaste" on it, which is Dharma phrase, not an Others phrase. Does Widmore switch over to the Dharma side, because he wants to mine the island for it's scientific treasures as opposed to the others who want to respect it and serve it?

WHO IS THE "CHOSEN ONE": So, we know that Ben had told everyone he was born on the island, and that this was possibly the reason that the Others chose him as their leader. But Ben was lying. Also, we now know that the reason that Richard was going through the past trying to see if Locke was their leader was because Locke told him to. When Richard did confront boy Locke, though, he seemed convinced that he was not the one. Check the Richard Lostpedia page here, it's pretty interesting. I think the real "one" could be Desmond, who is special and stands apart from time. Daniel seems to think Desmond can save them somehow, anyway.

Lots of things seem to be coming together and getting answered on the show, so that's exciting.

THE PREVIEW FOR NEXT WEEK'S EPISODE: So I always like the 10 second preview they show of next week's episode, and this one had some interesting shots in it. First, there was a shot of a light shooting up into the night sky, which I can only assume is the light from the hatch that illuminated an angry Locke way back in Season One (arguably the best Lost moment ever). So it looks like our crew will be facing some time travel issues next time: will they be able to see their old selves? Affirming that point was a clip of dialogue from Sawyer: "I saw Kate in the Jungle". Cool. The next episode is entitled "The Little Prince." Could that be referring to young Aaron, who we see meeting with Kate and the evil lawyer in the preview. Or, in a surprise move will it be referring to another atomic bomb, like last episode's 'Jughead'.? We'll just have to wait and see.

Episode Suggestion & More Whisper Thoughts

OK, obviously I'm too into this show because I can't stop posting about it. BUT...

If I were a writer for Lost, given this whole time-jumping thing I would be tempted to have Sawyer and Juliet travel back in time to when Michael shot Ana Lucia and Libby and try to stop him. Though, as my friend Zach pointed out, that may take us in a Quantum Leap direction that we might not want to go as a series.

We still don't know what happens if they see themselves while traveling in time through the island's past. For now, I maintain that they will try to talk to themselves, but their past selves will only hear the whispers. That would explain some of the phrases heard during the whispers, like:

Female Voice- "Maybe we should just talk to him"
Male Voice- "No if he see us it will ruin everything"
Male Voice- "What did he see"
Female Voice- "They could help us"

5.1 "Because You Left"; More thoughts

There's another new episode of Lost tomorrow night. I was wrong in my last post, it's not called "Jarhead", it's called "Jughead". Which is infinitely weirder. My guess is that they discover that they're in the 50s or 60s now, and a Archie & Jughead comic is how they do it? Here are some current questions/theories that I seen surfacing around the Internet that I thought were interesting:

THE BABY: In last week's opening we saw that Marvin Candle had a newborn baby. I was so intent on figuring out who it was (Miles, probably) that I forgot that babies can't be born on the island. Or was he conceived off island? Or did the "Incident" that occurred start the problem with childbirth? Also, if Miles was born on the island, does that explain how he got special mental powers? I think so, and would imply that Aaron will have those special powers, too.

WHO TIME SHIFTS? Ok, so Locke, Juliet, Rose, Bernard, Daniel & Charlotte and the random extras from the plane are now all adrift in time. But, Richard and the Others aren't. Hmm. My first assumption was that anybody from the airplane is now time traveling. But Juliet wasn't on the plane. Cindy the stewardess, however, was on the plane, but she was with Richard and the Others when Locke got separated from them. So maybe Cindy doesn't shift in time because she joined the Others, or was always an Other? Juliet was an Other, but since she left, now she travels in time? That almost makes sense, except Locke was supposed to be the leader of the Others now and it still happened to him. So I'm just confused on that point. Maybe Jacob is choosing who travels in time. What the heck am I even talking about? Most confusing show ever.

SAWYER'S FOOT: Why the whole bit about Sawyer being barefoot and getting an injury? Just a random event, or the precursor to something else? One theory out there is that the toe will become infected and Juliet will have to amputate. Then, the Losties will get shifted way back in island past, where they meet primitive island inhabitants. Sawyer shifts through time in front of them, disappearing, and they think he's a god and build a statue in his honor. Interesting theory, but I will be a little disappointed if that's the case, although I can't think of a more logical explanation.

THE WHISPERS: Are the whispers in the jungle really our Losties traveling through time and trying to change the past and failing? Are they the voices of other time travelers?

THE ISLAND: Is the island moving locations as it jumps through time? It disappeared from site, so that gets confusing. It does seem like it is changing locations as it changes times, because that would explain how the Beechcraft airplane with Eko's brother could end up on the island suddenly.

HISTORICAL ISLAND EVENTS I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING IN UPCOMING TIME SHIFTS:

QUESTIONS THAT MIGHT NEVER BE ANSWERED:
Why were the Others building a runway back in Season 3? You know, the one Sawyer and Kate were working on.
Who was communicating with Michael through the computer back in Season 2? Was it really Walt?
Why do the Others burn pillars of fire before attacking?
Why was Libby in the mental institution, why did she sell Desmond his boat?
Supply drop? Huh?
